The Gournay lavoir, or wash house, looks over the current Town Hall, near an artificial waterfall, built in 1984 by architect and town planner, Teigiero-Montes.
According to the kinds construction material used, the lavoir dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The structure is closed on one side and forms a covered passage over a path lining the river. The washing stone is visible above the water source.
Before the rise of household appliances, washerwomen would get together every washing day in order to wash their laundry directly on site, or simply to rinse it in clear water. Some lavoirs were equipped with a basin with both a washing tub and a rinsing tub, which is not the case here. Lavoirs fell gradually out of use over the course of the 20th century.
